Alaska or Bust - June 2008

After six months of planning, preparation, buying the appropriate insulated & waterproof riding gear, mapping out a route, making ferry reservations, and studying the "Milepost," required reading for anyone traveling to the north country, our merry band of four avid Harley-Davidson riders, Lane Greenberg, Tim and Sylvia Hayes, and me, John Vander Horck, AKA "The Horck," are about to set out on a three week journey of a lifetime, departing Santa Clarita, California, for Fairbanks, Alaska, on June 6, 2008, an 8,500 mile motorcycle odyssey. Here, John is seen with his 2003 Electra Glide Classic packed and ready to depart for Carson City, Nevada, our first overnight stop.

The color of the river water, the size of the trees on the way to Fairbanks (small). and the thing I love the most, DAY LIGHT most of the 24 hours! The leaves on the trees! FUN!!!!!

Hey John - What a great adventure!!! Be sure to pick up some 99% deet as we hear the mosquitos are HUGE and aggressive. Have a safe trip (at least you will be able to read the menus unlike our China adventure). Bob and I will be checking in on your progress.

John,

Great to hear that you are off and running. Wish I had the time and right stuff to do it. When you get back to the email world you will see a pic of me at Tahoe with an 08 Heritage Softail. That was my latest little daytrip with 2 friends renting in Sacramento during AJA.

Jane G was kind enough to let me use her blog address

Be safe,
Bob Goble

OK, so we're stuck here in Sitka, Alaska, with our 2005 Electroglide Classic in the shop in Juneau - wondering what it's like to ride 'down south'....
We did Sturgis last year, but trailered the bikes. If you get into Sitka, stop by the National Cemetery or Sitka PD and say hi to Ron and Betty Conklin. Be safe, the road is long and lonely....
