Day One - Santa Clarita to Carson City

SANTA CLARITA TO ALASKA - 2008

Friday, June 6, 2008

We, Lane Greenberg, Tim & Sylvia Hayes, and I, John Vander Horck, met at Denny's, Sand Canyon and Hwy. 14, at 0600 for breakfast and were on the road headed for our first overnight stop, Carson City, NV., by 0645.

The weather was clear but windy. We experienced 55 to 60 MPH gusts of wind directly across the highway from the west early in the morning. We were lucky to make 55 MPH at about a 15 degree angle into the wind out of Mojave to Red Rock Canyon where the wind finally began to subside. Hwy. 14 becomes Hwy. 395 near Pearsonville.

Arriving in Lone Pine, the wind completely died and the temperature rose to almost 85 degrees, quite a relief from the brutal winds we had been experiencing. Lone Pine was beautiful and clear. We stopped to visit friends, Carole Freeman and Sharon McBride, at the Boulder Creek Campground. Lone Pine is situated in the Owens Valley between the highest point in the continental U.S. , Mt. Whitney at 14,495 feet about sea level, and the lowest point, Bad Water, Death Valley, some 200 plus feet below sea level.

After leaving Lone Pine, we stopped for a scenic photo break at Convict Lake, near Mammoth Lakes, CA. in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. From Convict Lake we continued north on Hwy. 395 to Mono Lake, where we had lunch and got gas in Lee Vining @ $5.10 per gallon, thank you very much.

Then it was on to Carson City, approximately 110 miles to the north, arriving around suppertime. We had supper at the Firken & Fox Restaurant in the St, Charles Hotel. Food was excellent, service was crap. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective, it was also their Friday night outdoor rock concert, so is was busy.

Note: We're having to use a hotel computer as their WI FI is down; so, it will not allow us to attach photos. But, rest assured that we have several photos to share and hopefully will when we can use our laptop.
