Day Twelve, Anchorage All Day

Day Twelve – June 17, 2008

Today was the first time we actually got to sleep in and it was wonderful. We have clear skies in Anchorage today with temperatures in the low sixties, beautiful.

We had breakfast at the White Spot cafe, a hole-in-the-wall place with a counter with eight stools and three small tables. It was an easy choice, a $9.00 cold cereal breakfast at the hotel, or eggs, meat, and potatoes at the White Spot for $8.00. Sylvia had a pancake the size of a dinner plate and probably ¾” of an inch thick. Lane was kind enough to help her out with it. We highly recommend the White Spot for breakfast.

We dropped our bikes off at House of Harley in the morning for oil changes and to have our dust-laden air cleaners serviced. They said they would accommodate us, but we would have to leave them there all day. That’s okay, we have all day.

We picked the bikes up at 1700 hours (5:00 PM) and did some T-shirt shopping at the dealership. Much to our surprise, they washed our filthy scooters. We then rode to nearby Spenard and Hood Lakes, the local sea and float plane base in Anchorage, adjacent to the international airport. There must be a hundred sea & float planes there, some dating back to the 1930’s. It’s a must see attraction when visiting Anchorage.

Afterwards, we dropped into Chilcoot Charlies for a beer, a local nightspot featuring three dance floors and several small theme rooms. My favorite room was festooned with a collection of bras and undergarments hanging from the ceiling, from minuscule to outrageously humongous. Their motto is, “Come in for a drink, leave your underwear.” In the Chilcoot we met “Wicked Wanda,” our 73 year young bartender. Wanda’s claim to fame is that she won a wet T-shirt contest a couple of years ago, beating out twenty younger gals. She proudly displays the winning T-shirt in the bar.

We concluded our down day with a nice Italian dinner at Romano’s. It was excellent.

Tomorrow, were headed for Homer, AK, where we have reservations at 0600 hours (6:00 AM) to go Halibut fishing. Homer is the Bald Eagle and Halibut fishing capital of Alaska.

Sylvia,

Received news that Morris is going to be your new Sergeant. He will probably be here when you get back. Saw a picture of Michelle's sister's baby. He is so cute!!! Great pictures.

Have fun and be safe.

See you later, gator.
